The picture above is that of a menu board that hangs outside Kerala's omnipresent little toddy bars. It's in Malayalam and the items listed on the menu goes like this:
Rice, tapioca, crab, fish curry, squid, fish fry, prawn fry, cockle stir fry, fish head, boiled yam, chicken fry.
When I saw this picture, I was instantly salivating and nostalgically craving for those amazing seafood dishes cooked up in the toddy bars that I had frequented with friends back home in Kerala. I don't drink toddy, but I devour the spicy seafood concoctions that they serve.
The fact that I'm in Singapore also kind of gave me some sort of reassurance that I can somehow find some solace in the local Indo-Singaporean seafood which has some influences and shades of the Kerala seafood cuisine. Some of the items mentioned on the menu above is easily recognizable on a local menu here, like the infamous curry fishhead.
So I guess I shouldn't be complaining and probably will head out and grab a fishhead meal this weekend.
