Couple of weeks back when I was checking online for a store which sells the Moleskine journals in Singapore, I stumbled on to a store called "Books Actually". Their website was very minimal and kind of interesting. Interesting in a way to make you curious and go out and check the store. So I did, the saturday before last. It is nestled in a quiet idlyic old neighborhood on Telok Ayer Street. And it is definitely worth a check for its nice little decor and ambiance.
When I got outside the store, it started to rain heavily, and I ran up the stairs as the store is on the first floor of a quaint Singaporean colonial building. One of the owners of the store, a nice chap called Kenny, asked me if I would like to have some tea. And that led into a lot of conversation about books, advertising, asian culture and beyond over that cup of tea. That sort of gave me that warm homely welcome feeling that you will never find in a Borders or Kinokuniya store. Even though book collection-wise the store is quite small, it is a humble place with a lot of heart and many interesting book and writing related artifacts. Well worth a place to spend a saturday or sunday browsing, reading or you know, just sipping tea and brooding.
Here's some pictures that I clicked that'll give you a feel for the place. For better pictures check out this blog.
